For me the impossible takes a little longer.

I will need to redo everything on the HS CAN. Volvo changed the data rate from 250Kbps to 500 Kbps in 2005.

I do not think I will need to redo the LS CAN. Everything I seen so far indicates the LS CAN will be compatible with a CEM-L. The LS modules I looked at so far are the same. Both the 2004 S60R and the 2006 XC90 have the same REM. AEM. I pretty sure CCM, DDM, PDM, PSM, SRS, SWM and UEM are compatible.

Still need to look into Serial, LIN and MOST.

I'll get a better idea what it going to take when I start digging into the dash.

Can’t you just double the length of all. The wires? That will let the slow Bus catch up to the fast Bus.

Doesn’t electrickery work that way?

😀

Off to catch the short Bus.

I think you are wrong.
This is REM from 2004MY P2 - Image
This is REM from 2006MY P2 - Image
I believe they have different CAN commands at least.

About other modules same "problem".
For example: CCM from 2004MY P2 has a MC68376 MCU inside, but CCM from 2006MY P2 has MC9S12DG256, do you think they have same program's and algorithms inside? )) I do not think.

DDM and PDM P2 2004MY - have MC912AZ60A MCU
DDM and PDM P2 2006MY - have MC9S12DG128 MCU

and same about any others modules...
It is totally different platforms, they are just have same names - P2.

But exactly for your case there is more deep "problem", because you are going to combine P2 and P28 platforms, it is much worse. ((

I see 2 correct ways to realize this crazy project:
1. Swap everything from donor XC90 V8 to S60... it it very easy way, and it is really working way )))
2. Extract firmware from both CEMs (from CEM xc90 V8 and from CEM S60), disassemble them, figure out how to work any procedures for both, and transfer part of procedures from V8 CEM to other kind of MCU and combine it to 2006 CEM firmware. If you able to do it, you are really high level professional in reverse engineering direction. ))

The question is: Did the communication protocol change? If it has not, it does not matter what software/hardware is on the network. They all "speak" the same language. So far I have not found anything that indicates it changed on the LS CAN. But then again I have not found anything that confirms no change. I am inclined to think the communication protocol has not changed because developing a new one or switching over to a different one cost time and money.

Using all the wiring and modules from a XC90 looks like a sure way but: Is the harness physical layout the same? Do they both have the same set of features. For example the XC90 never came with the 4C suspension.

I know I do need to redo the HS CAN because of the change in data rate. The CEM is part of the HS CAN. I am thinking do the HS first and see if I can change just the harness around the CEM. If it works, I'll save myself a lot of work and some money. If it does not work I can always continue and do the rest of it. Either way we learn something at will be useful to both of us.

One thing I am debating is: go after the CEM wiring harness from a 2006 S60, 2005 S80 vs the one from the 2006 XC90. The S60 and the S80 share the same Electrical Wiring Diagram. The XC90 shares the EWD with a V70.

Local LKQ Volvo inventory.

2006 XC90 VIN: YV4CZ852761299806
2011 XC90 VIN: YV4952CZ6B1605049

There is a Rear Seat Entertainment system (RSE) in the 2004 XC90. The seats are in good condition. No rips, no wear through. It looks like it is a retrofit from a later model XC90. Been inclined to pick it but heat and time has prevented me.

2006 XC90 VIN: YV4CZ852761299806 - best choice I think.
