Catastrophic heater hose failure ! Topic is solved

Hello everyone, my car died yesterday during a strong pull in 2nd gear.

Coolant light came on, coolant spewing on the road, engine didn't overheat (stopped 8 seconds after the light came on).
No coolant on the front of the engine but some got on the heat shield above the exhaust manifold, the underside of the engine was so soaked that it was impossible to see where it was coming from.
Before I stopped the car worked fine, I didn't try to start it afterwards since I've heard that the coolant acts as a lubricant for the water pump and it's never a good idea to run any car parts without lube

What do you think could've happened ?
I'm thinking that a neglected head gasket might have increased the pressure in the cooling system to a point where one of my 23 years old coolant hoses might have just burst into pieces.

Ps: Radiator is new, water pump is 3 years old and 15k km, heater core is 1 year old.

You probably blew one or the hoses from a the turbo to water pipe, or perhaps one of thE heater core hoses

Once it is cool , take some pictures so we can see. You can also fill up with water and then see where it comes ouT on the cold car since we are well away from freezing seasons , hiver, except in the Alps!

Look as suggested at all the coolant hoses as one may have split but not be obvious. You can always refill the system with water and see where it comes out from as it may make it more obvious. Turbo coolant hoses may be a culprit here. Often overlooked and due to the heat in that area more prone to failure.

I wish you luck. When this happened to me it was in rush hour, no where to pull off as traffic was nose to tail. In my case it was the top radiator hose connection had snapped off the radiator. Strangely I was coming back from the dealer after they replaced the front sub-frame bushes but their work was not what caused it (already had new engine mounts all around).

Found the culprit !
One of the heater core hoses. I'm going to replace both as they were original

Man, we are just sticking the Volvo Horns this week.

Funny thing is a catastrophic failure like this is really what you want with a coolant hose - the alternative being a pinhole leak you don't notice until you overheat and warp the head.

Well, a OEM coolant hose splitting after 23 years is a Volvo quality issue. If you happened to own a Ford Mondeo or Contour from the same year as your V70, you would have split these hoses at least a decade ago (ask me how I know), which is good, because they'd be rusted out by now anyhow (I had 2 Mondeos that were nice cars till they started to crap on me with 12 or 13 years of age).

Not in the market currently for damaged/holed coolant pipes. No where to store them! LoL!!

Like abscate says, at least it happened quickly and you were able to stop fast. Now check all the hoses! If you look at the outside of the hose and particularly where the split is you can see the pipe has gone dull and has a rough surface to it. The rubber is shot. Good rubber continues to harden for about 10 years (like in tires). After that you are running on borrowed time. The fat these have lasted so long is amazing.

Hopefully new hoses and new coolant and all is well! But especially check the turbo coolant rubber pipes (the short ones by the turbo). If these are original then change them at the same time. One may look not too bad but the other will be horribly swollen and deformed if they are also original.
