2008 xc90 alternator ID

Post by deltajets »

I am prepairing to do the alternator on my wifes 2008 xc90. I am having a hard time Identifying if it is a 180 amp or 150 amp. fcp Groton said it could be either one and they did not know what if any physical differences there are. The numbers on the back show up on the WEB as being both. Has anyone else done this job and did you have any luck figuring out which one you have. The last thing I want is to put the wrong one in and get a warning light . thank you.

It would help if you post the part number on the alternator.

180A Volvo part number 36012382 supersedes 31110085, 30644805.
160A Volvo part number 36050269.
150A Volvo part number 36000210 supersedes 31110082.
140A Volvo part number 36050270 supersedes 30658084, 30667892.

The 180A would replace a 160A, 150A or a 140A. It should fit physical. The Amperage is a capacity rating. The electrical load draws current. The alternator does not push current.

That's the problem. The alternator is still in the car and I don't want to remove it till I have the replacement. The numbers I can read are on the black plastic cover on the back side. They are 0121 715009 and 6g9n-10300-ma. I suspect those are the numbers for the cover. FCP did a vin search and said it could have either one. I think at this point I will order them both and send back the one I don't use. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

0-121-715-009 & 6G9N-10300-MA are Bosch and Ford part numbers for a 180A alternator, Volvo 31110085.

Ford owned Volvo from 1999 - 2010. Of course they combine their purchasing power to get a better price. Do not be surprised if it is stamped FoMoCo (Ford Motor Company) on the back also.

Get the 180A alternator. Leave the rest of your money in your pocket.

Hi deltajets,

This is helpful. The alternator is actually made by Bosch, and the 0121715009 is the Bosch part number. I'm pretty sure it's the 180A alternator, although I think that number has bee superseded.

Here is an interesting reference. It shows the Bosch part number, plus indicates 180A.

Scrolling through the internet, it looks like the 0121715009 model was the number for Volvo OE alternator. Most places (including FCP) seem to have the 0125811051 version as the 180 alternator. This may be the exact same alternator, but not sold to Volvo; or it may be a revised version. I think you'd be fine with the one that FCP sells.

Good luck!
