98 70 series auto transmission rebuild?

Fresh from apparent success rebuilding an S80 transmission (knock upon wood!) I have a mind to attempt some trans work on my 98 V70

Last summer my V70 had some transmission issues which went away after flushing .

This is an all wheel drive wagon with the driveshaft to the back long gone that is basically a FWD car now.

I have 2 1998 S70 parts cars in the yard I'm thinking I'd rather put a FWD transmission in the car than rebuild the one that is in the car now .

Basically pull a trans rebuild it while the car is still running and have it ready to swap in when the time comes. Another thing is to get rid of a parts car or two to tidy up the yard.

Both are turbo cars , one has a blown motor(oil cooler line burst seized up tight) the other has a good motor but the trans has no reverse

I feel like if a car has to go the blown motor car should be the one so I was going to start stripping that one .

Are the transmissions basically the same except for the angle gear? Are there different final drive ratios and how do I tell what the final drive ratio is are the first questions

Anyone have any links about the 98 70 series transmissions ? Rebuilds teardowns etc?

The automatic transmission from the 98 should bolt straight in i believe. Ive heard of people putting m56's which are the manual transmissions, straight into the AWD ones.

So it looks like I have the AW42

I'm not seeing a lot of threads about rebuilding it or youtube videos for that matter

No kits at Rockauto either

It’s. A great transmission and it’s easier to pull one from a junkyard then rebuild.

I’ve got one in my parts stash ready to go.

I just found this on the 50-42LE trans, which is what you're looking at from the '98 FWD.

50-42 manual

I'm doing a manual swap in my '97 T5 and am wanting to save the old trans for the wife's '97 GLT, just in case we need it. Her car has 300K+ miles and this is just under 200K.
Thought about a rebuild, but will probably just seal it up and tuck it away.

I'm going to line this up as a winter project I think. As long as my wagon transmission lasts a few months more I'll be happy. I'll start stripping the parts car with the blown motor and good trans . Since the motor is no good it will make it easy to proceed . I'll strip the good bits off junk the block then position the car somewhere which will be its final resting place then before the snow flies I'll get the trans out and put it in the garage.

I think it makes more sense to leave the other car with the running motor intact longer
