Fuel guage 1992 240

Post by kaerlighedsbamsen »

Just bought a 240 stationcar. Runs well but the gas guage stays permanently on full tank. the needle returns to empty when power is shut off.

From searching the forum i suspect it is the sender in the tank next to the pump that is either not working or is stuck on "full". Anyone knows if there is a way to tjeck this? Is it possible to measure the resistance or something?

Thanks in advance!

The float in the tank may be stuck in the up position as well.

There are two ways of checking:

1. Remove the sender unit and see if it is sticking. At the same time move the float up and down and see if it changes the gauge.

2. Check the resistance with an ohmmeter. To do this you will need to drain the tank. Disconnect the fuel tank connector and measure the resistance between the sending unit lead and earth (ground). Value should be 250-350 ohms. If the reading is incorrect it is possible that the tank has not been fully drained or the unit is inoperative. Now add 3 gallons of fuel to the tank. Resistance should now read 141-240 ohms. If this is incorrect the unit must be replaced.

Tanks a lot!

I've got a Heynemanns Manual but i barely touches the subject.

More questions: How is the operation done? Is it nessesary to take out the whole gaspump or is the sender seperate? There is talk of both a sender and a float- are these separate items? The cover of the gastank is sealed with some sticky material- is it possible to open it without destroying the seal? How do i locate the wire that is for the sender and separate it from those for the pump?

Thanks again!

The vehicle in the Regina swap is a 940. The tank unit on the 240 goes through the top of the tank and is much easier to get out. The holding ring usually comes off by using a screwdriver and a gentle tap with a hammer.

On some 240s there is a pump in the tank and the sender unit is attached to that. However, in either case the sender unit can be obtained separately.

I'm not sure what yours is sealed with as I have never seen anything other than the sealing ring on there. It is possible that someone has had this apart previously and resealed it with whatever.

If you do take the unit out you must use a new gasket (O ring) when it goes back together. Also if there is an in-tank pump replace the stocking filter before you put it back.

If there is a pump there will be three wires - black, brown and, I think, grey. The black and brown are for the pump so the other is the sender unit. For some reason the brown wire is the earth (ground) wire according to my wiring diagram. Usually it is the black.
