I've been playing around with a scanner using the live data display on the coolant temp sensor.

I have never touched the thermostat in this particular car so I don't know yet if it is an OE part or aftermarket .

I have been observing the temp in different conditions and the lowest temp I have seen after the car is warmed up is 205 degrees cruising with the AC not in use. AC on high the temp is 212 or more generally. It sometimes goes above 220 briefly but comes down to 205 or 212 with AC as long as the electric fan is working as its supposed to.

This is not bumper to bumper traffic or unimpeded highway either , just rural driving at up to 50 mph .

Is this normal for what others have seen? I think this is too high consistently .

Coming from the Ford world , I'm used to seeing temps within 2 to 5 degrees of the thermostat rating . Recently I worked on a 2005 explorer sport and put a 180 thermostat in it and using live data I can see exactly when the thermostat opens and I almost never see a temp above the rating of the thermostat (engine driven clutch fan) .

Am I crazy that in a turbocharged car I think 20 or more degrees above the factory spec thermostat is too hot ? I feel like the ECU is probably pulling back timing because of the temp .

I can see ignition timing on the scope but that is a little too complex and variable to even get into. Too many other things affect timing , throttle angle driving conditions etc.

I ordered a gates 33208 180 degree part and if the rain holds off I'm going to swap it in today and see what happens , and see what thermostat I pull out.

Turbo engines should have 87C thermostat....non-turbo can have both...87 & 90C.
I wouldn't use nothing but Wahler or Vernet when it comes to thermostat.

The thermostat for a turbo spec is 87c, which coverts to 189F

The car will run the temperature up to 221F before the fans kick on, that’s normal. The fans will take it back to near 189F before the cycle off

A non turbo thermostat is usually 90C

The ECU conTrols ignition timing according to load which varies much too fast to study on a display other than coarse trends

 Well the bolts won't even budge so I will put this project off for a bit.

Its about to start pouring out anyway. I will yank the thermostat out of one of my parts cars tomorrow

I do see the 221F fan working as intended but once I'm driving I am never going to see 189F It will sit at 205 with the AC off or 210-214 with the AC on. I don't know what temp the fan is shutting off I will have to see if I can get a line on that.

I drained the radiator then tried the bolts and got nervous so I put the coolant back in and fired it up to watch the temp , judging by watching the coolant tank and watching the water move I think the thermostat is stock temp , it began gurgling and shooting air bubbles out the burp hose right at that temp.

For the t-stat housing?
Hit’em PB Blaster and walk away.
Give it at least a day.
During that wait time,
get the EXTRA long
torx bit for those bolts.
Cheap insurance! 😎

Well the bolt under the fuel line is stripped ,the torx I mean . I guess I will try an allen and see if i can get it to move otherwise I will have to take the water outlet off the block.

I don't know if I have mentioned this before but whenever I see a torx used for no reason the first thing that pops out of my mouth is

"FROM HELLS BLACK HEART I STAB AT THEE !! "

I guess ford loaned some idiots to volvo who inspired using torx bolts where none are needed

The key is to press on it hard(with the weight of your body)while slowly braking it loose.
This way torx will not skip and strip the bolt.

I the last guy stripped it and then put it back in way too tight , a lot of times if you ruin a torx on the way out you can still put it back in . There it lies , like a ticking time bomb .

I was suspicious of it so I pulled the lines above it to get a straight shot at it.

The other one came out but it was waaaaaaay too tight i just had a bad feeling.

I have 2 parts cars I went and looked at one with the intake already off , it doesn't look easy to get at the top bolt with the thermostat housing still on

Even with the intake off and the thermostat housing off it still is a stupid way to bolt that water neck to the block.

You practically need to invent a new tool to get the upper left bolt . A torx bit with an allen that is about 3/4 of an inch total length then a 6 point wrench around the allen part and a flat bar prying on the bit to keep it firmly seated .

A reduced size 6 point head , like a small block ford or chevy header bolt with the proper metric thread

Im going to get a new set of extended Torx bits mine are a bit chewed . Which is not difficult since the Torx is and always was a stupid design.
