2008 V50 Radiator Fan not working (sometimes)

Post by wickedweed »

Hi. I am having a strange problem with the radiator fan. The radiator fan does not come on at all and causes the engine to overheat. The funny thing is if I were to restart the engine, the fan sometimes comes back on and works fine throughout the drive, regardless of how long.
I would say 5 out of every 10 cranks, the radiator fan works ok.
Any clues to where I should be looking at?

ok. so i gave up and sent the car into the workshop and found out that the Fan Speed Controller which is attached to the fan assembly is faulty.
so basically this fan has two speeds and the higher speed doesn't work.
i have given in and decided to change to a new fan. now, i have the old motor (in working condition) attached to a semi-working speed controller. i suspect that one of the power transistor inside is gone and i hope to identify it and repair it myself.

from searching on the net, this is the fan controller module diagram. i was wondering if anyone here knows if the signal going into this 4/71 is just a simple PWM signal?

has anyone ever attempted repairing this before? the immediate problem that i face now is that i can't even open the box up.

appreciate your tips or any inputs. thanks!

Same question.
My V50 2.4i has no issue until I drive aggressively. In normal conditions, the fan comes on, the thermostat opens and closes. The engine maintains appropriate temperature even when its 100 degrees outside. Running the AC or sitting in traffic does not cause problems, but when I accelerate going uphill, the temp goes up until the AC turns off and I have to park it.
Is it the fan controller? I couldn't open the jpg in the link from widkedweed. Can the fan controller be replaced? or is it just easier to replace the fan assembly? and,

is there a way to test said questionable controller thing?

the block test says its not the head gasket. No engine codes. No faults show up. No loss of coolant. The coolant system seems in tact, the overflow reservoir fills and then returns to normal.

WacoVolvo,

Have you checked the coolant flow in the radiator? That sounds like it could be partially (or largely) blocked, and thus not cooling.
It's a thought!
