V70 PCV job alternative route

Post by chancejack »

So, I just did the pcv job, I had the manual, so I followed its way to clean pcv system. So I did not take off the intake manifold.

1. remove the power steering pump
2remove the alternator, not need to take out completely, just lay aside giving space.
3remove the intercooler pipe, coupling. 7mm clamp.
4 oil dipstick, must cove the hole , I fell a piece of the plastic into the hole.
5 upper radiator hose disconnect to give space.
6 Remove the ETM body, 4 10mm bolts, just feel it and remove them. clean etm , also give the space , press the inlet pipe down and tie it there , give space for the pcv box
7 then remove all the pcv related hose, the trick to move the clamp is to try to pipe the side band out. some tight place just cut the pinch head. Important to clean the benjo bolt the hole inside, and the nipple .

Install TRICKS:
1. use silicon lubricant. put the hose to the box in place before put it under the intake. The ETM out there, give you space to work on. Well, I use otieker clamp, just side cutter can do a good job.

I didn't use a new breather box. just use the oven cleaner to soup it over night. and Cab cleaner clean it good couple of times. Ideally, you can use diesel to soup inside.

Thanks for posting this.

I was thinking the same bc taking off the I.M. is NO fun!

As long as you create enough space (by removing the PS Pump and move the alternator out of the way), then you can do this PCV job.

You are correct, the Box can be re-used up to 250K. I usually fill it with a bit of gasoline, close the ports and shake it.
Then drain it.

:D Thank you CN90. Your posts help me a lot. Next I need to change crank seal. It leaks every where. Although my PCv didn’t clog at all. Do you think I should left the oil pump gasket alone?

At 75K, it is probably leaking from the CAM seals and NOT the crank seal.
Look upward to see where the oil is coming from.

I already have the CAM seals for my 2005 XC90 2.5T (same as 2004 V70 2.5T), just waiting to have a "boring" weekend with nothing to do to tackle this job.

I removed the intake to do this, its cool to see/clean inside the inlet port. I bought the febest kit but rightly decided not to use it and bought the genuine Volvo kit (from a USA seller). It would appear the genuine kit i bought wasnt fully genuine because i had a hose (breather box to engine) failure after only 6months . A close inspection of the hose casting markings/lines and it wasnt genuine.

I thought i mixed some hoses up but i found the said Febest hose in its packet still in my parts bin, its markings were exactly the same as the failed part.

TIP: Carefully check all parts before installation

I managed to replace hose by removing the ETM and pipes. So yes it can be done without removing the inlet man.
