Ok, Im really a cheapskate.... (oil use question)

Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.

Too thin for chainsaw bar oil IMHO. I have tried it.

OK I was wondering about that. I go through a fair bit of chainsaw oil every year, but I've been buying it.

I wouldn't use used oil thinner than 10w30 as bar oil, but it seems to work fine. Depending on the formula, most bar and chain oil is between SAE 10 and 30 weight.

I cut up a lot of wood since I use that as my heating source exclusively and I can't tell that my chainsaws have suffered one bit from use of any kind of oil I have drained being put in the saw's bar oil tank. I guess pro lumber jacks cutting thick hardwoods down need RACING bar oil but us lightweights just need something resembling slick on the bar. My Husqvarna is a Swede too so I bet it is proud to recycle oil. By the way, if you haven't discovered diamond rod bits for a Dremel as chain sharpening tool then GET ONE! It will make your saw cut linguni on wetter wood and big chunk saw dust on dry stuff. New chains aren't as good as one sharpened with the diamond bit. Pull back and upward to get the leading edge sharp and WOW it cuts great.

I also heat with wood almost exclusively and run a big Husky most of the time. I always thought the bar oil seemed much thicker, not quite gear lube thick, but almost. I go through a tank of bar oil per 2 tanks of fuel with the recommended stuff. With drain oil it seems to use a tank of oil to a tank of gas.

I gas lighted Robert on this one too, he pointed out fuel waste earlier too

You are looking at this all wrong Abscate! Look at all that low mileage oil you can save to top off the fleet with :lol: :lol: :lol: . June

I know it would be contrary to your cheapskate tendency, but about 20 bucks gets you an oil analysis that will tell you if the oil is contaminated. Blackstone is one company.
