94 Volvo 850T suspension or transmission noise

Post by henrysin44 »

Hi all, whenever I make right turns (under load) a grinding noise with vibration is felt on the drivers side, if I make the right turn with my foot off the gas no noise or vibration is felt. I replaced the wheel hub and strut tower mount and bearing on the drivers side and it made no difference (both were worn out). I have a driveshaft laying around that i'm going to swap in to see if it makes a difference but wanted to know if this symptom was familiar to anyone.

How are your motor mounts? if they collaps badly the motor's weight could force the driveshaft to rub somewhere.

Could be a wheel bearing starting to go, often shown in early stages when loaded and turning.

Also check your sub-frame bushes.

I was positive it was the wheel bearing, but I replaced it to no change in symptoms, I changed out the sub-frame bushing for polys a few months ago, really does improve road feel.

Did you grease the poly-bushes? If they get dry they will groan. Part of the reason I don't use them. Some like them but I don't as they transfer more vibration than good old rubber. Each to their own preference.

If you have changed these items I am now scratching my 2 brain cells to think what else it could be, like worn or loose sway-bar end links, loose steering rack, the steering column bearing at the floor.

When you replaced the engine mounts, can I ask what brands you used? I have had some, in particular the pad at the crank pulley on the passenger side that failed really quickly. The rubber separated from the metal portion. If you can gently lift the oil pan near the mount with the wheel off and car supported to see if it is still good. I usually put a piece of wood under the oil pan for a floor jack to lift on to spread the load.

The last thing then left is the drive axle. The right axle has a carrier bearing and those fail and when you turn left it will load that bearing more.

Hmm the sway bar end links are completely shot, the boots of them are just gone, I'll give new end links a try, they're cheap enough for process of elimination. I don't remember the brands of the engine mounts but I got them from FCP quite recently and they look quite shiny still.

I had carrier bearing on the mind however the grinding only appears when the right side of the car is loaded, but urggg i really hope its not a steering rack/column issue....the car drives very straight though, i can no-hands for quite awhile on a straight road.

I think the steering suggestion would be last on my list to check. I think the other possibles and especially the end-links if they are shot, will give you challenges. For the end-links I would suggest Lemforder or OE. Not had much luck with others like Meyle HD (some like them) or IPD HD.

Good Luck!
