OIL pressure sensor icon at startup

Post by darrylrobert »

Oil is extremely important in an engine, i found that out recently when i cracked my sump.

Before you start your car always check that the oil can icon is there because if its not your sensor is stuck open or if the wire it broken and you basically have no oil warnings and no warnings the circuit is open. No fault codes on VIDA either.

Maybe the car needs to be run for some distance before the ECU detects a problem like a loose wire or sensor stuck open?

A lady at work years back would say to me, Hey Rob, there's a gravy boat lit up on my dashboard. What does that mean?
We laughed a bit and then I would add oil to her little Mitsubishi.

Funny, so a little Mitsubishi has an oil level sensor and a Volvo doesnt, i did notice that my car has an "optional" level sensor sump pan. I was considering adding that but was easier just to replace with my spare standard sump. I wonder which cars or markets got both oil pressure and level sensor probably the R model and are they wired to the same oil can icon....

I think Volvo engineers/designers have neglected the importance of oil in the engine, i realise its NOT an aircraft but its basically one (unmonitored) wire. In comparison pull a wire or fit a LED bulb to your overhead courtesy light and you will get an error code, ive got error codes for my side mirrors "folding motor missing" , do i need to call a tow truck if my interior light needs changing or mirror dont fold..yet if the pressure sensor is stuck open or wire damaged there are no error codes.

All the R models had the fancy oil pan. I’m not sure on the T5’s, though.

We are in 2020 and we should be thankful that our old cars have a dipstick, so we can check the oil level every time the gas tank is filled, as instructed in owner's manual ;)

What I can really complain about is a coolant temperature gauge that keeps sitting at center even when expansion tank is boiling.

My T5 just has the standard oil pressure icon, no oil level sensor. I don't recall an option for the level sensor when I special ordered my car in 2001. Newer model years maybe, but I'd bet it was only available on the R models.

VIDA has CAN-bus query in its SQL database for the oil level sensor for P2. Some cars might have it.
