Brake lights work fine. I can feel the solenoid clicking in the shifter when I hit the brake. It only happens when it is cold. I have taken the cover off of the shifter and can not see anything wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm not real familiar with the XC90's but many Volvo models have a shift interlock cable that runs from the shifter over to the ignition switch. Not saying this is your problem, but if the solenoid is doing its job the cable might be worth checking to be sure its not loose or kinked. One other possibility (an issue I had on an S60) is that the shift knob itself had worked upward ever so slightly and made the car difficult to get into gear at times. Give the shifter a firm tap downward and see if you hear a click.

I've had the same problem on my 2007. I almost have to 'force' (to my feeling of almost breaking it) to shift. I had asked the dealer to check at my last service, but was quoted about $600 to check into and track the problem.
Hasn't happened recently since the last time it was 'forced' it sounded like something broke. But so far, the last month I haven't had it happen again, and no indication that something did break.
I just keep my fingers crossed!

Our 04 S80 T6 with 78k has the same problem when the car is cold. After the car is warm the shifter slides out of park just fine.

Sounds like the light grease Volvo put on the shift lock linkage is getting gummed up when cold, and lets go just enough when warm. Take it apart, clean it out and life should be good

Perhaps the big button on the shift knob is about to fail? The shift knob is easy to replace with a used unit - but hard to pull . This is on a S60
