I had a 1976 Chevrolet Caprice Classic with 454 V8 for a while in the 1980's. Very smooth ride. Very poor gas mileage.

I had a '79 CC with a 350 in 1989. Transmission died and I sold it to a towing yard for $100.

Looking at the commercials of US automobiles of my youth I realize why I absolutely love my S80 T6 so much.

Here are some more commercials that show just how different the focus of the automotive buyer was. Smoother, quieter, bigger engines seems to have been the focus plus looking at classic cars is just plain fun!

Classic Low Rider . Very very poor mileage especially in town. Friend's dad was a big guy. They had an 68 4dr 122, 76 Caprice 2 door, 77 Dodge Monaco, we gave him our 78 XR 7 and then they bought a 84 240 4dr Turbo.

When I was 16 getting my driver's license I was madly in love with my uncle's 1964 Thunderbird. I looked all summer and settled for a 1964 Mercury Montclair Marauder fastback black with a red interior. On the Marauder I loved the checker flags on the front fender and the three blades on the hubcaps. I didn't keep it long as it broke down too much. Really that Mercury made me want to know how a car worked and how to repair it.

An interesting story on how I obtained the Caprice. I had purchased new a 1980 Dodge Colt (4 cylinder with 4 speed and weird 2 speed high /low range). In 1982 I drove it in a ditch and totaled it and my right shoulder. I needed a car with an automatic, since I could not shift. A friend had for sale the 1976 Caprice with 454 that his dad bought new in Texas. So I went from driving one of the smallest cars built to one of the largest cars ever built. I sold it in Denver a few years later.

Sounds like something from the Kerouac book "On the Road", except 30 years late.

Since most of my vehicles were purchased used and in private transactions, they often have interesting back stories. Typically I have purchased from people I knew. As I have said before, I have owned and still own (too) MANY vehicles.

I remember the era of disappearing headlights with vacuum driven covers , all of which froze up in winter so you couldn’t use the car at night. Also, all the V8s that wouldn’t crank at -10 F, while my mother’s 66 Beetle fired up like clockwork. She was quite a sensation. The soccer Mom back in University at age 34...she missed her chance in the UK because all the slots were given to soldiers. Day care was leaving my two older brothers home while she took me to class where I listened to discussions about Faust.s sexuality in a German...I’m still in therapy over that.

Best was when in front of the Student union and the 6V battery died. She took her purse strap off, wrapped the generator pulley like a lawn mower , and hand started it to a bunch of admiring 18-22 year old cool kids. All while spirting a very trendy Jackie O sheath with perfect shoes

Now she drives. T5
