Throttle Body Cleaning

Is it safe to say that if the TB is gummy there may be a sludge problem elsewhere?

It's typically just blow by from the pcv system. Potentially it could also be oil from the turbo. Or oil from the crankcase. Give it a scrub, then check your PCV system and your turbo (if you have one). :-)

You are typically supposed to clean TB and PCV on 50,000 mile intervals.

It’s normal to get oil residue in the hoses and TB especially on a turbo

To remove the cable, using one hand, spin the throttle quadrant (pulley like thing) towards the windshield, with your other hand, guide the cable off to align with the slot in the side of the quadrant, and pop it out.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

You can unclip the rod that couples the accelerator cable to the throttle body, loosen the Four M6 10mm hex head screws and remove it fir cleaning.

Disconnect the electrical connector if needed.

You will need a new throttle body gasket, too

Volvo 9135990, circa £4 in the UK. Presumably similarly cheap in the US.

A gummy TB gives no reason to suspect a sludge problem. Clean it up. Be sure not to get solvent into the TPS.
