Need some help. I own a S70 (non turbo) 5 speed and the muffler needs to be replaced. Does this car actually have two mufflers? Looks like a center one and the one in the rear? Is the one in the rear a muffler or something else? I attached two pictures. When I look for replacement mufflers it is from front to rear and includes the center muffler and seems to omit the muffler in the picture. Ty

The one right behind the catalytic converter is a resonator not a muffler. The one on the end is the muffler.
A resonator does not muff the sound. It just changes the sound to sound to something more pleasant so that they can use a less restrictive muffler and get better fuel economy.
If you take the resonator out or use a aftermarket resonator, the way the exhaust sounds will change. The OEM resonator is tuned to the car. Making a change is a crap shot. There is no way to predict what it will sound like if you make changes.

Been a while, but as I recall from my 2000 V70 non-turbo, it has a muffler just forward of the rear wheels that runs across the car, and then a second muffler/resonator box on LHS just behind the rear wheels.
There are plenty of on-line dealer web-sites that you can look at that will show you the whole system.
Neil.

You can get the Starla replacement from FCP and never pay for another one under their warranty for life. That’s the one with just the muffler. It’s reported a bit louder than stock but not Obnoxiously so.
Expect about 3-4 year lifetime on that product
If you are near ALB stop in sometime!
