My winter mode intermittently turns on by itself which is very annoying. I replaced the geartronic gear selector with a junk yard one hoping that would solve the problem but it didn't. Anybody have any ideas?

You sure you are not inadvertently hitting it with your hand - happened to me many times?

Could be that some spilled coffee or some such liquid has mucked up the switch. I'd pull the unit, gently blast all the contacts with keyboard duster and a soft bristle brush.
After that, spray it with electrical cleaner, hang and allow to drip dry, in front of a fan. I've had that sequence cure many electronic component issues.

Good call pixeldust. Thinking back that was the approach I first tried, although I actually opened up the button to do the cleaning. Simple enough process.

Quick bit of research says your problem may lay in the GSM (Gear Selector Module).
Module responsible for the Geartronic feature, winter mode, and "others".
I'd say pull that fuse for now, but the "others" scare me.

Can anyone point me to a schematics of where the wires go after they leave that circuit board in the shifter that has the "W" switch on it? 2007 XC-70.
I've been troubleshooting the Winter mode, and I actually found the switch on the circuit board to be bad. It had been very intermittent, probably a spill from a previous owner. The actual plastic button at the base of the shifter has a prong that strikes the switch on the circuit board. The spring action comes from the tiny switch.
I removed the switch from the board (de-soldered) and replaced with a similar switch. I know the switch is now working, but now I get no winter mode. I can live without it, but these things challenge me. That's why I spent 1/2 a day working on that board lol.
I can't seem to find the wiring diagram for my model that includes wherever the wires leaving this board go. I'd like to tap into them and check the signal with everything assembled but I need to know which wire goes where. The flat ribbon cable controls the LED's for "Park", "Reverse", etc, but there's two more shielded wire bundles coming off a 10 pin connector on the board and I'd like to see the function of each.
Tia for any help.
