Broken Oil Filter Cap - on the inside?!

Post by Jonboy74 »

Ok, so for all of the more “advanced” things I have done to my 02 V70 2.4T (tie rods, plug coils, plugs, struts, shocks, brakes, vacuum lines, etc), I have never changed the oil in this vehicle myself. Mainly because of not having the proper cap wrench.

Finally ordered one on a recent FCP Euro order. I know. It only took me 13 years to order one....

Anyway, today I drained the pan, then removed the cap, and noticed what appeared to be some broken plastic at the bottom. Cleaned it out with a shop towel, and it definitely appears to be broken....  I know they aren’t expensive, but come on!

So, how big of a problem is this? Any issue with me proceeding for now and just replacing the cap at the next oil change, or is this something I should full stop on this oil change until I have a replacement cap?

Thanks!

- Loosely install the cap so no debris gets in.
- Tell everyone in the house do NOT drive the car. Put a big sign on the steering wheel.
- Go to local Volvo dealer, this part is $20 incl a brand-new filter itself.

PS: This is why I preventively replace all plastic oil cap (BMW, Volvo etc.) after 15y/150K miles.

The broken plastic shown is probably from some cheapy oil filter.
What was the brand of oil filter removed? Is it from your local auto parts store? If so, you can guarantee that it was made in China.

This is why I only use Mahle or Mann oil filters in the Volvo.

Thanks, cn90.

I know I asked, but....Seriously??

No, that piece of plastic is from the filter cap itself. I can tell based on the broken pieces and the inside of the cap.

The oil has only ever been changed by the Volvo Dealership and by my local indie Volvo shop and the filter I pulled out was a Mahle 0X149

So....What is that piece of plastic? What is it’s function?

Some sort of retaining ring for the struture inside the cap.

I would have sworn it was a ring from a plastic oil can at first.

Goodnight, jonboy

Yeah, I gave it some critical thought and decided to clean it out and go ahead and put it back in the car. I’ll get a new one on order, but in the meantime I’m going to drive it as is. I cleaned out the cap and made sure there were no remaining broken pieces. The filter popped into place and stayed just like it should have. I figure it’s plastic, and minuscule, but not so small that it would go through the filter, and if anything else breaks off it would collect and stay in the bottom of the cap.

I’ll let you know how it goes....and I’ll post pictures of a new one next to the old one the next time I change the oil.

Goodnight Elizabeth! 😀

The photo showing the inside of the cap is too dark. I could not figure where that piece came from?
