A previous owner of my ‘98 V70 T5 (260,000 miles) replaced the seatbelts & seats and triggered an SRS-232 code: “LEFT BELT, INTERMTT, FAULT, OPEN CIRCUIT, CAPACIT, TOO LOW”.

Is it most likely that they forgot to unplug the battery while doing the job, thus triggering an erroneous code? Or could it be more serious (expensive )?

Unfortunately, the $100 AUTEL ML619 scan tool I bought is not capable of erasing the code. Is there any way to clear it on my own? Or do I need to bring it to a Volvo mechanic to diagnose/clear?

The seatbelt *is* plugged in and seems to be working as expected, but I have no idea where the wire from the seatbelt goes nor how to inspect it further. I’m really nervous about driving around without functional airbags; please assist!

The switch is in the seatbelt latch down at your hip. Check that the connector is firmly plugged in

You will need VIDA or good scanner to clear SRS codes, unfortunately,

VOL-FCR will do it as misha said. Make sure to get a vag-com kkl cable with a ft232 chip (FTDI). I might still have a virtual box image up and ready with an install if you need it.

xiaotec "850 OBD-II" Android app ($2) and appropriate ELM327 cable will also clear '98 V70 SRS codes.

Update:
I had some of my facts incorrect. The previous owner replaced a lot of the interior, but the front-left seatbelt was *not* one of the items replaced. Furthermore, the Autel scan tool I bought *is* capable of clearing SRS codes. In this case, though, the seatbelt's airbag module was - in fact - defective, so the system wouldn't allow the code to be cleared.

I got a seatbelt from the junkyard for $20 and it cleared the SRS light automatically after being installed. I didn't even need the scanner!

Note for others planning to replace their seatbelt retractors: Make sure it fits your car!! I initially grabbed one from a 2000 V70 that looked identical to my 1998's, but it just barely didn't fit. Cleared the SRS light, but only 2 of the 3 bolts attached correctly. Got a '98 seatbelt on a subsequent junkyard run and it fit like a glove.

If you scan the srs module....the code will be remain stored untill cleared with a proper scan tool.
