96 850 A/C switch problem. Keeps sparking?!?

Post by nctlspider »

When i bought this car, the blue light on the a/c switch would never come on. So i took it out and it seemed nothing was wrong. The orange REC light would come on and i could here the motor moving the door under the passengers dash. SO yesterday i decide to look at the switch again and i see that the circuit board has one copper section that blew. Manual climate control by the way.

No problem, i get some coil wire and jumper to match the broken contacts. I plug it in and the LED sparks off, burning one of the little legs in half. I twist them together, turn it on again. Same thing. Figuring there is something wrong in the board, i use alligator clips to try and recreate the wiring scenario

Violet/yellow- Hot
Black- ground
Green/yellow - assuming the a/c relay
brown/yellow - the REC door

So i run the violet to green, and nothing. I then add black to either one and i become an arc welder.

WHAT should this be doing? Why can i not figure this out? I Don't want to buy a new switch and burn it too. Any suggestions? I just wanna see if the compressor will spin. Is there a way to do this without the relay? i have been on the Search engine all day, no luck. thanks

Jumpering the Green/Yellow wire with the Yellow/Violet wire should simulate the A/C switch being on.

If it still acts up try pulling the A/C relay - it may have an issue.

If you want to hot wire the compressor on jumper the switch wires as described above and then jumper the A/C relay socket positions associated with terminals number 30 and 87. From there it goes to a pressure switch and then on to the compressor.

The A/C switch itself is a high failure item.

Thanks Lee.

I will have to wait till next weekend to look at this again, since I have BIG tests this week before spring break. I didn't think adding the ground into the equation was correct, but looking at the circuit board it looked right. THe relays work when i switch them both into the fan spot. One is grn and one is blue. The wiring diagram on the side makes them look the same, with different part numbers. I suppose next i'll check the pressure switches and clutch gap.

Does anyone know a place other than the dealer for the a/c switch?

thanks

Cory,
eBay has these all the time. Just be patient if one isn't on there...it will turn up. Otherwise, you might try www.erievovo.com (call them as they don't answer email).
