Replacing 2005 Xenon HID light assembly with 2003 Standard?

Post by gcha8e »

The overall question:

Can I replace the headlamp assembly from a 2005 Xenon HID with a 2003 standard bulb system without an electrical/voltage issue?

The story:
I have undertaken the restoration process of my totalled 2005 S60. Geico estimated $5K in repairs to a $3K car.... toast! That's the bad news.
The good news is no one was hurt and I bought the car back for $240 from GEICO! :D as well as replaced the 2005 with a 2007 S60 with lower miles and a working moon roof! at a great price.

Other good news, the totaled '05 runs and drives. The required parts needed are
Hood/headlamp assemblies/grill and bumper cover/radiator assembly and fan shroud.

I have already purchased a full set of these items off of a junked 2003 S60 at the Pick'N-Pull Junk Yard and my pal and I have mounted the radiator/condenser. We need to merely realign the hood a little and get the mangled headlamp frames bent forward for re-installation of the lights

The headlamps are stupidly expensive to replace. For expediency I was going to sell the bulbs and internals on the Xenons and plunk in an older glass assembly from the 2003 (the only one convenient at the yard)

Any tips appreciated.

So the result of this was that my 2005 was NOT compatible with the "2001-2005" headlight. The wiring harness doesn't mate. Maybe it is compatible to replace Halogen for Halogen, but my smashed 05 is the Xenon HID lights. Thought I would share so maybe to save someone else the headache.

ive looked at the wiring diagram and it looks doable. I cannot post a pic because it looks like this website is having issues but the xenon has an extra relay CM16 that needs to be re wired to the standard CM17

You need a complete redo of the wiring plus car's configuration change.

Thanks for the tips. I'll see if that's doable or order up some newer model lights. I see a good set of 2009 Halogen lights on ebay, will I need to do any reconfiguration because they are not Xenon HID? Does 2005 "compatible" come with caveat? The 2003 lights are returnable to the junkyard if I need to. I only went this route with older lights because there are no 2005-2009 available in the junkyards here. :(
