From this documentation: It seems my 940 uses the AW70 transmission.
https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/tech/servi ... vicing.pdf

What is the difference between AW70 & AW70L ? and will either work in my automatic 1993 940 Non-turbo sedan ?
It is also the non-Bosch version.

From Wikipedia:
AW70
The AW70 is a 4 speed fully automatic transmission used in the Volvo 240, 740 and 940 series cars starting from 1982 up to 1997, with the end of production of the 940. From the 1989 model year a lock-up torque converter was offered which changed the designation to AW70L. This transmission was originally used in the US specification 1982 Volvo 240 with the B21F engine, as well as in 1983 with the B23F engine. The AW70 did not see worldwide usage until 1984 in certain 240 series cars. The AW70 transmission was not the only automatic transmission used in cars of this era. Some of the 1985-87 B230F-equipped 740's came with a ZF 4HP22 transmission (designated by a gearshift labeled "P R N D 3 2 1"). The AW70 (gearshift labeled "P R N D 2 1" with a side-mounted overdrive lockout) is widely considered significantly more reliable than the ZF 4HP22 transmission.
So how do I find out if I need the AW70, or the AW70L ?

Unless you have a B230F with LH 2.4 your transmission is a AW71 unless somebody did a degrading retrofit.

North American 1993 940
B230F LH 2.4 AW70.
B230F Regina. AW71.
B230FD AW71 or M47.
B230FT AW71 or M46.

Gee that is a lot of options for a single model.. confusing.
Thanks I almost bought the wrong one it seems.
Supplier tells me I need an AW70L, but I am not so sure now.
Today I put the volvo on a lift to see if I can see any numbers on the transmission but I could not.

1) Any way how I can identify my current transmission ?
Where are the identification numbers usually printed ?
I definitely dont want to buy wrong.

2) Is AW70/71 interchangeable ?

3) I also found some references that all volvos made after about 1987 all has Locking Torque converters. Is that right ?
Mine being 93 will therefore need locking torque converter right ?

Yes. The AW71 is just a stronger version of the AW70. Gear ratios are the same. L on the end means Lock-up torque converter.

There should be a ID plate on the transmission. I think it is right above the pan. Clean the crud off.

My 940 is REGINA, so it seems I cannot go wrong with an AW71L or 70L
What do you mean by LH (Left Hand Drive) ? Probably not.
It looks dead easy to remove a Volvo Transmission. Lots of space.

The 'LH' stands for "Luftmasse-Hitzdraht" - the hotwire anemometer technology used to determine the mass of air into the engine.

LH 2.4 is the Jetronic fuel injection computer + EZK Ignition computer.

Exactly at that position the plate is missing.... Darn !!!

1) Any other way to identify it ?
2) What will I experience differently using an AW70L versus an AW71L in the 940.
I am not sure exactly what you meant by "stronger" as what differentiates the two.
So what did 71 add what 70 doesnt have ? Or fixed problems which 70 had ?
