Anyone have a DIY for removing rear diff?

Post by diplomaticm3 »

Got my hands on an almost new rear diff for a 2000 V70r and I’d like to see if I can tackle the job.

Thanks folks.

I think the only way to do it is to completely remove the rear subframe. Here is a video on the process:

Some parts are glossed over but the essentials are all there. You obviously won't be able to cut lines as he does, so some modifications to what he does will be needed.

If it hasn't been done you can also replace fuel pump while rear subframe is out

The rear sub-frame has to be removed as the sub-frame is a 'clam-shell' which is what clamps the rear diff in place. Volvo in their infinite wisdom decided to put the bolts holding the 2 halves together from the top of the sub-frame so it has to come out to to replace the diff.

Other than having a V70R diff I just want to check what you are planning to fit it to. Your profile says you have a 2004 car which is a P2 chassis which is different to the P80 chassis. Not even sure it would be compatible as the P2 rear frame is totally different.
