Are master window switches supposed to be plug n play? The DS window does not work on my partner's "project" '01 V70 X/C. I put a new working motor and window rail in from the local pick n pull, old window had come off the rail and bent the rail/transmission assembly. Dealership was working on some other stuff on the car, and they said the window switch is plug and play, but I got a used one from eBay which was listed as tested/in working order; I plugged the new switch in and none of the buttons worked.
Are window switches plug and play, or do they need to be programmed? PNs on existing and the "new" switch are identical.

They are not necessarily plug and play even though the P/N may be identical. The little white label(s) indicate how they’re programmed and that has to be a match between the old and new switches.

I’ve always used a official Volvo parts lookup and when using chassis # I’ve never had an issue with used switches from scrapyard/ebay. Is it the identical PN?

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

Yes, they are programmable. However, as others mentioned, if you get a junkyard pull with the exact same numbers on it, it should work without programming.
I ended up finding one on eBay for relatively cheap and it worked like a champ, no programming needed, but I made absolutely sure that the numbers all matched.

With the same PN, it should be plug n play. I've personally had success.
I'm not sure if you also need to shut the driver door, and lock/unlock three times with the key fob. I seem to remember doing that but that may have only been to program the locks.
If no buttons work, double check fuses, relays and that your new master switch is getting power. Do your rear window switches work?

It seems I recall someone in a prior discussion saying that the switches were plug-n-play up to a certain model year, like around 2000, and then for anything newer you had to consider the programming. Maybe it was at the P80/P2 break???

Ive had all the same issues with two 02' xc70s. I took apart the switch box finally and cleaned all the metal contacts for each window button. Put back together and they all worked. Sometimes those connections just get filthy. I've also done the same thing with an old Saturn and an old Chevy Blazer.
