Good to know as well. I still haven't found someone that can copy my valet key to the flip keys. If I understood you correctly, you mailed your keys to that locksnith. They cut them. Brandt Locksmith had no issue cutting the new key with my valet key. I had an extra normal key but they said just send them the valet and they can use that. So you should be good to go that route. They specialize in car keys so they know what they are doing. I also only sent them the blade end of the key to cut it.

Sorry, just re-read your question. Yes, I mailed them the valet and the new key blade and they cut them and sent them back. Just give them a call before you do so. I found them via one of their employees on Reddit Locksmith sub who helped me out. It was very fast and the key works perfectly. They are kinda an old-school shop that isn't specializing in doing online/mail orders but I think they'll do it so long as you speak to them first.

I found a local locksmith who'd cut the keys, knowing that he couldn't program them. There's a simple workaround for programming.
I went to a junkyard and got a new ring antenna, cost me a few bucks. I then took the steering column covers off, disconnected the existing ring antenna, plugged the junkyard antenna in. I then ziptied the working key to the junkyard ring antenna, experiment with orientation to make sure that it works. Everything was secured in place and the steering column was reassembled.
So the keys cost me about $30 for four, I only needed three but they came in pairs. Cutting all four cost $100.
ETA: That was $130 for four keys and a bit of my time. I needed a spare key for my 2001 V70 and didn't know about the "workaround" so I foolishly went to the dealer and one key with programming cost me $150.

I recently tried the same thing, to program to key myself. After purchasing VIDA it rejects my DICE clone, so Volvo probably have flagged those Chinese units.
Fortunately I was to use VDash to program the keys, $25 one time purchase and I was able to program two ignition keys and remote.

I've got to wonder if there's a "catch" to this... are the keys really programmed the same way that VIDA would, and each is uniquely recognizable, or does the car now think all the keys are the same one?

So the key and the remote are two logical units, even though it's only one item that you hold in your hand? Real cute, Volvo.
Is that $87+$87=$174 for each new key, or for as many keys as you want?

Good question, I'm not complete sure. But I did use VIDA to check this, it now sees three keys stored, and can tell each keys separately when I plug them in (key number 1, key number 2, etc).

I'm in a real Jam, just got the car. Worked on replacing the rear emergency brakes had to change the knuckles, dust sheeld and all the other internals. Finaly certified on Friday. I drove it for about an hour. Went in decided to change the key fob to a new one and get the key flipping again Wasn't thinking and broke the transponder chip
I have no keys and the dealer is over 4 hours away. Can anyone help out, for the money its going to cost to tow it and have new keys made, its probably worth learning how to do this myself. Can someone please PM me with how it could make this happen.

If you're able to get mail the easiest thing to do would be to buy a replacement key, get it cut (though mail via the link in this thread) and then program it to the car, either using VIDA/Dice or Vdash, etc. In theory you could do all of this without having to drive anywhere, if you get mail.
Are you sure the chip is broken? I would try to just tape it near to the antenna or on the key and see if it will start. It might just work...
