2004 V70 Samsung phone noise ONLY when charging...

Post by cn90 »

- Car is 2004 V70 2.5T with 120K miles.
- Radio (CD player) is stock Volvo.
- Installed GROM-AUX1-VOL01 device one year ago (in 2019) for Aux Input.
- Phone is Samsung S20 (2020).

- When connecting to Aux Input only, music plays fine, zero issues.
- The moment the Samsung phone is plugged into the car 12V cigarette charger, there is noise on the car radio speakers.
If the charger is unplugged, noise goes away.

- I did google search using key words "volvo samsung charging aux noise"...and see quite a few posts.
- This static noise problem happens NOT ONLY in the cars even at home and happens to both iPhones and Samsung etc.
Let's say you are at home and plug the ear phones to listen to music, things are fine until you connect the phone to the home charger (120V), then noise...

- I am not an electronic engineer, but I am thinking things happen at the cord level (i.e. not at the internal hardware/software inside the phone) in such as way that the charger (whether at home with 120V or inside the car with 12V) somehow creates an electromagnetic interference with the Aux cable?

1. Any opinions as to the cause of this static noise ONLY when charging the phone?
2. Any solutions?

Thanks!

Phones aren’t just dc charge devices anymore, the microprocessor is involved, and hence it’s completely feasible it’s putting RF interference out

Does anyone know the difference between the engineering aspects of car stereo vs home stereo?

- As above, in the car, if I plug the charger into the cigarette charger ---> static noise in the speakers.
If I disconnect the phone from the car stereo and did the same thing (plug and unplug charger): no difference in the phone's tiny speakers.

- Interestingly, I did the same experiment using the home stereo (Pioneer stereo from 2000, 20 years old with floor speakers).
No static noise whether I plug or unplug charger.

So, my thinking is that: the issue is with the design of the car stereo. What do you guys think?
