Code 9150, ETM repair/replacement questions

Post by 93SCMax »

Greetings,
I've had the orange triangle and "Engine System Requires Service" messages for awhile. My scanner can clear them (I don't have VIDA/DICE), but it always comes back. Took it to a shop and they told me the code thrown was 9150, sensor #1 on the ETM. I have the Magnetti-Marelli ETM (8644346), white label. It's the original ETM but in 2007 the Volvo dealer did the software upgrade. It's past time the thing failed. Car is a T5 manual transmission with 156k on it. I'm the original owner. Never had any issues with low idle surge. Low idle is steady as a rock. Only recently experienced a slight surge/hunting when running in 2nd or 3rd gear at steady throttle. Not serious but clearly related to the ETM and code.

I've ruled out rebuilding the ETM with with XeMODeX due to high cost, age of car and lack of driving the car (car #3 of 4).
I'm researching doing the sensor rebuild, but am concerned that the current ETM could also have an internal electronics problem. Does anyone have experience with the Module Master rebuild kits on Ebay? Do they hold up and use the Sacer sensor? Any recommendations, based on experience, going this route?
I'm also looking into a junkyard replacement. A place 90 miles away has a used ETM from a 2001 S60 T5. They want $75 for it. Car has over 200k miles, but the ETM is PN 36050563...an ETM build later than original 2001 production. It's most likely a replacement ETM. This S60 T5 was built in the same Swedish factory as my V70 T5, but 1 month later. I believe both cars should have ETM 8644346. Both are engine model B5234T3. Open question: When they flash the ETM, are there any differences in the programming between an automatic transmission vs a manual? I'm thinking not.

I'm leaning towards just swapping the ETM out with the used S60 T5 ETM. The pic of it seems real clean (ie. possibly not on the car long). I have the programming concern and hope to get a response concerning auto vs manual. I know swaps are hit and miss, but I've read some negatives about the rebuild kits and calibrating the magnet and would appreciate input from those with experience.

Thanks for any input provided.

Have them send you a picture of the label so you can see the build date. If you look in the ETM forum down below, you will find the date where Volvo starting shipping replacements from Sweden with a universal software that should work.

$75 is overpriced for a used ETM part - you could easily have to spend 150-300 in software to make it work.

I belive there are differences between the AT and MT throttle body software but am not an expert there.

THere is a bit more discussion about the MM ETM in the P80 forum where the 1999-2000 models live

Quote from Mike
All the white labelled 2015 plus Volvo rebuilds of part numbers 36050563 and 36050564 have a Volvo branded Sacer style contactless sensor.

Volvo stopped supplying yellow labelled ETMs in the late part of 2014.

About 66% of faults on these are NOT with wiper films however the contactless inclusion puts some people's minds at ease.

Check IPD's price for Xemodex rebuilds. They're a much better alternative.

Thank you for your prompt response. Very helpful!

I believe I wasn't clear about buying the used ETM, I would only go that route knowing I do not need reprogramming. I realize having the correct software is critical. My question was geared at the software being correct between the 2001 S60 T5 "newer" ETM, and my 2001 V70 T5 original ETM.

Pic attached, no dates but the PN clearly is the Volvo "replacement" PN for the 8644346 (original from my T5).

From your link, its a white label 36050563 and should have been shipped after 2015.
