Stuck in Park -- shift lock button won't work either!

Post by plumsmooth »

I am trying to sell this darn Volvo 850 Wagon that has been sitting of the last year.
Things like this are discouraging and I am ready to give it away if I have to.

Car started right up. Everything appears to work. I need to move it 15 feet after I put air into the tires.

But now it won't even shift -- even with the Shiftlock button engaged.

Well I am glad this didn't happen to someone trying to drive it away after paying me for the car.

The little knob up top seemed to almost pop out for a second also. But the rubber is peeling away from the shifter.

You know I'd buy a shifter just to drive this to a junk yard!

Please help...

Smack the top of the Shifter knob to push it down. Then try to get it out of park.

stupid question but did you depress the key in. Sometimes the springs go out and it does some weird stuff. I lost turn signals until i pushed the key in.

If you lift the center console you should be able to access the solenoid that locks the shifter and get it out of the way

I have a week or so to figure out how to install the new one. My concern is that the tutorials I see suggest putting it into Neutral or another gear?. Will I need to figure out how to change the gear from park to install the shifter. And I am wondering if the shiftlock release not working is tied into the button not working? I think you still have to press the button on shifter to get it out of gear when the shift lock button is pressed?

I gave up on local salvage yard and ordered a full nice wooden shifter from the only eBay seller that seems to have a bunch. I figured for an extra couple of bucks I'd go for one with less rubber and nice looking veneer! But it is coming from California to VT!

Update: Volvo still stuck in park! Brand new used shifter with perfectly working button.Audible solenoid sound. Shift lock override will not help.
Brake lights appear to be working. Should I tap on this rod or try and lubricate it before I open up the console? Any chance it could be stuck here?
Off course I do not want to break it further...

OK That was fun let's hope I remember to put it back. What do I do now. I don't know. I guess I try and shift and see what is going on?

I don't know the shift lock release seems to do the same thing the solenoid does -- both are working! but something is stuck somewhere. Should I upload a video? This is mind boggling?
