2005 S80 T6 really need some educated guesses

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2005 S80 T6 really need some educated guesses

Post by Kruef951 »

[Hello. I bought this car about 3 months ago, and Ive put a good amt of miles on it everyday, roughly 40/day. On this day I drove it on the freeway for about 20 miles & everything was fine until two miles off the freeway it went into gear but wouldn't really go anywhere, barely got it up my friend's driveway. There was no warning no transmission slipping nothing until this incident and it's been sitting since. There is a new message on my Dash that reads Transmission Service urgent. I've received so many different theories on what it could be, but I'm interested in what you guys think since we are Volvo oriented here.. please don't hold back some background about me: my father always worked on my car's when I was younger and I really don't know much about working on them but I'm on my own with this issue and I'm not sure to even start.... So any thoughts or advice or anything would be much appreciated thank you

You need to have the codes read. It's just guesswork otherwise. You don't mention fluid fill and condition or miles on the car or if any service has been performed like a fluid change. Does the manual mode work? June

Well, I was told to start with a fluid and filter change, oil and transmission. I was going to do that today until someone told me it would potentially cause damage to the engine if I change the transmission fluid?? As I remember it the manual mode worked the same as the other gears when this happened mind you there was no warning or hint. I did run codes actually a week before this happened and MAF code and an exhaust valve – Bank were the two codes it threw; p0101 and p0027

Check level as suggested. However, my experience is that when this happens it's about time for a new or good used transmission.
How many miles has it?

Ok well, I just started my vehicle and let it warm up and went to put it in Drive and it would not go into any gear I put it in manual mode shifted through those gears even stepped on the gas while it was supposed to be in Gears and the RPM's went up but the car did not go anywhere. It does show on the dash as I shift through the gears the proper letter that goes with the gear I'm shifting into

It has 219531 miles

Really, you think it's the transmission even though there was no warning or slipping into gear?

Sounds like it's toast but do check level first.

So youre saying the transmission can potentially go out and not give any warning ? I was told it would not do that... That it wouldnt be the transmission if there was no warning symptoms....

Don't throw any money at the transmission at this point. Start by checking the fluid level and color (condition). Scan for codes and report back.

My take is your transmission needs to be rebuilt with your symptoms and miles. This can be done in car by dropping the subframe and tilting the engine or a complete normal removal. Not sure on the shop rates where you are located, but I would guess around $1800-2500.00 with at least a 12 month warranty.

As stated many times, your transmission is a normal GM transmission with a few changes. Parts are readily available and any decent transmission shop can have the transmission out, rebuilt and installed in a few days. THERE IS NOTHING special about it b/c it is in a Volvo. The different parts fit just like normal parts. You do want to have all the upgraded parts installed, which most shops do. A new torque converter would be a sound choice as you are up there in miles. I had mine done for the XC90, basically the same unit, for about $2500 turn key with a 24 month unlimited mile warranty.

Start with the first suggestions and then shop around or research rebuilding yourself. There is a recent thread by bronco on his epic rebuild which is worth reading.
