I think I remember Dave Barton story that he saw the moose emblem on a rally/racing Volvo that may have been a factory effort. He then copied the idea. That's what I remember.

I had yellow moose shields on the flanks of my bright red 850 wagon for a while (until they weathered off), and some kids at a light were really concerned that I had done something heretical! Then they saw the moose and had a good laugh. Got some thumbs up from Saab guys.
