£10-20 per hour for lift rental here, mechanic on hand to assist if needed. Cheaper prices normally are bay/lift only, adding in the use of tools generally sees the hourly rate double. Each shop is required to provide insurance (both car and personal), and are regularly inspected to ensure lifts, extinguishers, air supplies, tools and all electrics are meeting or exceeding specs. You are of course liable for any issues to your car resulting from poor workmanship on your end, but damages from their mechanics, tools, equipment or lifts is covered by the shop. They're really rather useful places, and save a huge amount of initial capital expenditure. Thankfully they're becoming increasingly common too, but until prices decrease (will come with supply) it can sometimes be hard to justify over paying an independent.

I've yet to use one personally, as I haven't had a job come up on the car yet that couldn't be done on the drive.

I was just wandering about your household accounting methods. If you claim a saving from automotive inventory on hand, do you get a credit to the shop equipment account? It seems that should be generally accepted household accounting practice (GAHAP). You may quote me if it helps the justification.
