Everyone (99%) in NY lives within 30 minutes of a college. We are the only state that employs more people in College Education than Walmart. Think that over.

One of my other interests is historic trains. My town has a 1910 American Locomotive Company Pacific class (4-6-2) steam locomotive built in Schenectady, NY. I have helped a lot on cleanup and the small museum around it.

The ALCO plant had a huge history of building big stuff. All that’s left now is STS specialty steel.

Some geniuses tried to close that down because it destroyed the view if the casino but luckily sanity prevailed. Imagine that, flooding an industry to promote a tax machine that transfers cash from stupid people to smart people.

Here's a peek inside the plant, the structure on the left is a 3 inch thick steel Bascule Bridge being built for NYC

You have to heat the metal to 1200C before you weld it. NYC has inspectors on site watching on welding in real time

You could pul aVolvo engine with that crane, 75 ton rating. They did not buy that at Harbor Freight.

One of the reasons ALCO IS IN Schenectady was the proximity to the Canal so you can float giant stuff away on the water, the cheapest way to move things!

Is the current facility only a portion of the original ALCO plant? 75 ton! Wow! The biggest crane in a plant I have worked was 10 ton. Thanks for the photos. Got any more? Do manufacturing plant photos interest anyone else here?
