2004 xc70 clicking when turning the steering wheel

Post by arrrxivvv »

My 2004 xc70 makes a clicking sound when I turn the steering wheel with the car stationary. It only happens in a certain range of turning, somewhere around one turn to the left. There would be several quick consecutive clickings, tick-tick-tick-tick-tick..., or maybe squeakings, at that range, and stops if I turn further. The range is pretty consistent, the sound never comes up when turning right or turning less than one turn to the left. The speed of those clickings relates to how fast I turn the steering wheel, but not to how fast the car is moving. I hope this means it's probably not the CV axle.

The same sound occurs every time when I brake to come to a stop or accelerate from the stop. Seems like it occurs when ever the car is leaning forward (when braking) or backward (when accelerating) to a certain degree. These are also quick consecutive clickings, tick-tick-tick-tick-tick

There seems to be some other noises when going over bumps but I'm not sure if they are the same sound.

Other than the sound I don't feel anything in terms of driving and handling.

I have replaced the strut, spring seat, strut mount and end links on both sides recently since the shock was worn. The sound was there before those replacements and haven't changed after.

Any idea what to check? I'll inspect the suspension components, but since the occurrence of the clicking is pretty consistent maybe someone have had similar problems.

Suspect #1 & #2 are the joint on the lower end of the steering shaft (#13) or the joint on the Countershaft (#9).

Thanks.

Is it the part mentioned in about 8:25 of this video:

Do I have to remove the boot to check it or is there ways to check it without taking it apart?
