V8 timing belt or chain? (2008)

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

V8 timing belt or chain? (2008)

Post by volvothirdtime »

I have some time before I should have to address this.
Can anyone definitively tell me if the Volvo V8 (which I
gather Yamaha designed and built) uses an external timing
belt (as many previous Volvo models do) or an internal chain ?

I ask only as I have talked with several dealer service departments
and it is about 50/50. I am guessing the service advisers honestly don't
know and pick an answer.

Best info I have is a marketing brochure showing a cut way view.
It shows what looks like a chain, but it is a sales piece.

Thanks to all.

I don't know, but can't you look at the 'front' of the engine for a clue? Sounds pretty sad if the dealer(s) can't tell you....

Design specs by Volvo. Engineering and manufacturing by Yamaha.

Same engine block is used for the Yamaha F300V8, F350V8, and XTO Offshore outboards. Got to wonder if the lower end from a Yamaha outboard can be used to get up to 5.6 liters of displacement and up to 425+ hp. The XTO 425 is 5.6L 425 hp.

RickHaleParker, I encourage you to try the 5.6 L modification after you get your V8 project sorted out. :D

I don't think so. The 5.6 is only two years old and they are $45,000 engines. I would need the crankshaft, rods and pistons from a 5.6. Different stroke and bore. In other words a short block 5.6. That is if the crankshaft will bolt to the Volvo transmission. Heads on the 5.6 are reverse flow, exhaust manifold is between the heads. Would need to use the Volvo heads unless I route the exhaust out the hood.

The 5.3 is the same bore as the 4.4.
