Single-Lifting 850 from engine sub-frame.

Post by cmdz »

I'm very new to being hands on with a car so please forgive the novice level of this question.

I'm in an awkward spot and have to do some sidewalk-work.

Is it okay to lift my 1994 850 sedan like this?

Image

also, if acceptable, is it safe to do so with this cheap floor jack i have? https://www.walmart.com/ip/Black-Jack-2 ... W/34202690

Any other concerns?

Its best to use something between the floor jack and frame to prevent bending the metal. Some people use lumber, hockey pucks, and other commercial products. Level surface preferable, use parking brake and wheel chocks. Do not ever get under the car unless you have good jack stands in place (non-harbor freight) and use the jack as a backup. Even with all that just be absolutely sure before you go under the car that its stable.

I recommend a piece of wood under that. Metal to metal is slippery. I had a similar set like that from Walmart for maybe twenty years. It bent / twisted side ways while working on a driveway with an odd grade before it finally failed (leaked). I would say they probably don't make them like they use to either.

Whatever you do don't get that set. Purchase something larger and jack stands with a safety pin. Never going back to those types of jacks without a secondary safety mechanism. Not worth you life!

When I was forklift trainer the guys I trained were 100 time better drivers if you call barely tipping it under control is safe. Had to undo their habits and help them understand the dynamics in case CAL-OSHA ever made an inspection or worst after an accident. It only takes one accident or for them to run over one of the old ladies walking through the warehouse and their ten years of driving on the edge without incident...

Read this Post and purchase something better and safer for the long haul.

I wouldn't buy any Jack Stands without the safety pin. As for the Jack, HF has some good jacks from their ratings but Costco has the best warranty and easiest to return policy. Unfortunately, it is not the cheapest. Be sue to purchase at least a 3 Ton for greater stability, easy of use and more weight capacity.

Remember, weight capacity is for a pair. A 3 ton pair is 1.5 ton capacity for each stand. I don't think you missed it though there was a lot of info and none of pictures were clear, so here is the Double Pin Jack Stand again.

Costco just started selling these again. Would have been okay with these but they weren't available a month or two ago. It was $129.99 two years ago and $99.99 when on sale. You don't have to return the item anymore for a price adjustment if it goes on sale within a short period of time after your purchase. I once received a $500 difference / refund for a massage chair I purchased online for my parents. They made the adjustment over the phone.

After all the years of getting by with a $20 Jack it's time to give the arms and legs a break so I opted for the larger units.

I have 2 from Costco, one for each side. Both my son and I think it works faster, safer and get much more height than the QuickJacks I returned to Costco. They were $30 off when I purchased them so was the same price as the current aluminum unit for $149.99.

https://www.costco.com/cat-3-ton-low-pr ... 07254.html

Even if the Jacks are more than HB here is why I would still buy from Costco. Today, the Vitamix motor quit. I called Vitamix and gave them the serial number and they said Costco still owns it, meaning it's still under Costco's warranty. The unit automatically get a 7 year warranty and I am 3 weeks from 7 years so the manufacturer is sending out a label for me to ship it back for warranty repairs. The unit actually started working while I was on the phone so there is a thermal protection but the Rep said to go ahead and ship it back regardless and when returned she will include a $70 Voucher for purchase from their website. If the company didn't honor the warranty Costco still would.

With 4 of these stands I can easily maneuver and never feel unsafe regardless what I need to do. Beating myself up with unsafe and short stands all these years. Amazon is gouging as they were $45.99 not too long ago.
