I doubt it's the PNP switch, but I guess it could be. It only acts up under specific conditions. It's also an automatic. I do appreciate any and all suggestions though!

I had a flashing arrow on my wifes 850 a while ago when the temperatures were quite cold right after startup and when putting it into reverse at the end of the street. It never happened otherwise. I have no clue what the problem was, but these things can be random or intermittent.

+1 with abscate on this one. Otherwise you could end up throwing money trying to fix the issue. Only other 'cheap' thing to try is to drain and refill the trans oil (about 3.5 liters). If it is really cold, have you checked the oil level when cold in the trans, and when was it's last trans oil change?

UPDATE: although I posted this years ago, I’m just now back on this site. On the off chance this will help someone- this issue was the ignition going bad. The ignition wasn’t communicating properly with the transmission, so it would default to “limp home mode”.

Awesome follow up. Was that ignition switch bad or something else?
