Re Alternator...

Do not buy local bc it is all Chinese junk.

Buy Bosch (New). Check FCPEuro etc.

I ordered a new (not rebuilt) and have not had a problem since, about 30K miles. I rebuilt the original to have as a spare. It is worth noting most alternators sold are rebuilt units and most do not replace the bearings and if they do, they use cheap Chinese ones.
I was 90 miles from home myself. Having Gold AAA I got it towed home for free.

After I throw on the new Bosch alternator I'm rebuilding my OE also. What else should I replace along with the pulley and voltage regulator?

Why would a pulley fell off?

Rick explained it earlier:

When the belt slows down, the inertia of the Alternator Rotor produces a relative CW spin between the shaft and pulley.
Indicates the pulley is not “free-wheel” or “overrunning” like it should.

I got cut off driving 55mph.

The tensioner is OE so I'm replacing it also.

Drove 500+ miles since throwing pulley back on with no issues. Still installing a new Bosch alternator this weekend.

The DIY for 2001 V70XC takes pulling out the cooling fan only -- two 10mm screws. Unbolt the alternator and carry it along the alley to the air box end, and pull up and maneuver it out. Way easy!

I can share the details if set up works for you?

Similar task to removing the entire thermostat housing. Need to remove belt, PS pump out of way, intercooler pipe, drain coolant, and remove upper radiator hose. I'll also remove the fan to make it easier.

Wondering if the lower bolt on the belt tensioner can be accessed from above or does right front wheel liner need removal?

Don’t forget to cover up the induction pipes when you remove the induction hoses. Dropping stuff in there is a bad day

XC70Rider asked above: "What else should I replace along with the pulley and voltage regulator?"

An alternator's bearings are always replaced in a rebuild. I doubt Volvo sourced "lifetime bearings".
