This is the best Volvo site on the net ... I've had a '94 855 Turbo (250 km) for the last two years - and with the help of this site, avoided many costly 'dealer visits' just by pulling and clearing codes and fixing the problem on my own. Now for a question:
I'm planning on upgrading and have an opportunity to purchase a 2001 V70 XC AWD with about 170 kms (just over 100 miles). It's priced at US$17,500 and is great condition with all the records for service at a dealer, no accidents etc ...
Anyone have exprience with this car - pros and cons, what kind of extra maintenance can I expect over and above the regular oil, brakes, tires, and the odd belt or hose? Does this represent good value for the $$.
Thanks again,
2001 V70 XC AWD

I don't have any firsthand experience with XCs but do look at the tires for signs of mismatches or different brands. Ask if there's records for tire purchases and look for all 4 tires getting replaced at the same time (good).
With the AWD Volvos, tires must match or you get a constant universal (or planetary) gear speed mismatch, and that shortens the life of the gear (expensive). Audi and others solved this, but Volvo didn't until 2003 or later, I don't know the details.
That's about all I know about the difference of the XCs. They are about 200-300 pounds heavier, so fuel economy will be less than FWD 70s.
Thanks for the compliment on the site. I'm very proud of it, and thanks for being a part of the forum
