I have a 1999 S70 GLT
I noticed the battery light on the dash intermittently last week. Then during an hour long ride home the light comes on and shortly thereafter the lights dim and car dies on the road. I immediately thought alternator and battery.
The next day we go to jump it and it starts, we hooked it up to the jumper to give it some juice in case the alt was not charging.
Drove it to the local auto store and they tested the battery and alt. The test came back faulty voltage regulator. I started it up and drove it a few minutes home. I have a 2001 v70 for parts so I swapped out the alternator that night. This is where I think I may have mucked. When removing the old alt, I did not disconnect the negative battery terminal until I was about to unhook the Alt wires. I blame a mixture of a lack of sleep and sense . When installation was completed I hooked up the jumper cables and tried to start the car. It starts and then immediately dies. I repeated this process till I became concerned for the starter. I then reasoned that maybe the Alt from the v70 might have been faulty, I got a new alt, charged the battery at work and after installing a new unit it still starts and dies. Note: it was starting fine before I went under the hood and left the battery hooked up as I floundered with the coolant hoses, power steering, and unhooked a few wire connectors.
I notice that after I try and start it there is a high pitched beeping noise and a faint sound of crackling electricity under the front of the engine around the starter. I have jimmied with the wires around the alt to try and find a short, with no luck.
Now I have tired to reset the security system thinking it may have been triggered. I am at my wits end, any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
I have owned this car for 7 years now, and I have worked on it a number of times (including replacing an alt once before) I am
stumped on this one.
Thank you
