DRL+turn signal issue with S60.

Post by InsanitySpark »

Hey Volvo fans,

I have a question that is bugging me for a while now and I cant seem to find a solution to it.
I have the 2009 S60, bi-xenon headlights, automatic (the 5 speed one), 2.4i 140hp.
I've bought these: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3277102 ... 4c4dMkHbNv about 3 years ago, as in my country we have to have DRL or dipped beams through the day. And a single bulb of mine for the dipped beam goes for about 50-80$, I decided that this is the better solution. It works perfectly fine, it fits, it works. Until the moment I turn on the dipped beams. I have it through relays where once the dipped beams are on, the DRL turns off and only the turn signal works. Sounds good. But without the dipped beams - they work correctly, flashing normally, looking good.
Once I turn on the dipped beams and use the turn signal or hazard lights, the whole thing turns into a badly made strobe lights that flashes yellow/blue lights and goes 3-4 flashes like a strobe light between cycles.
It looks bad and also, sometimes police officers are wondering what kind of stupid thing that is and why I have it..
Any ideas on why this is happening and how can I fix it? If needed - I will make a video.

I am sorry but I can't upload the videos directly.

This is a link where in the comments you can see the videos of the issue.

If someone has had an issue like that I'd really appreciate how they resolved it.

LEDs need a stable voltage, i dont fully understand your setup (a video might help) but if your getting strobing is could be from a pulsed voltage source or basically a signal that isnt clean. You can try a inline resistor to clean up the voltage.

Ok i re-read your post, i have a very similar setup on my xc70. when i turn on the dipped beam a relay switches on and disconnects (turns-off) the DRLs. I think you have messed something up with the relay connection. post a diagram of you wiring.

EDIT: ok so your car has fancy headlights different to mine, you need to find the dipped beam 12v wire before it goes to the lighting module.

I will do more pictures and videos later if I can get it uploaded here.
The setup goes like this:
The DRLs are connected directly to a + on the car so they are constantly ON and goes through a relay. The relay on the one side has the white DRL light, on the other side it has the dipped beams signal coming directly from the cables in the headlight.
If dipped beam is not on (even if parking lights are on) the DRLs works correctly, there is a constant white light that is glowing and once I click the indicator or hazard lights - they turn to flashing amber lights (perfectly normally flashing).
Once I have the dipped beams on, the relay turns off the DRL so it doesn't glow needlessly (as it blinds a bit through the night the other drivers) and only the turn signal works. Unfortunately, the turn signal works like a strobe light, it blinks badly and it looks like it's having a faulty connection.
I suspect the ballast or the xenon bulb are causing some sort of interference but I cannot determine how or why.
As I know of cases where LED lights have been causing radio issues with cars, but this one is the other way around haha.
