And thanks abscate for the offer of a windshield and transmission! Unfortunately I think replacing both of those is a little beyond my skills/tools/patience

Need the test conditions for the above.
Check for shorts between the wire that should read infinity.

I actually worked saturdays at an auto glass place for a few years and we left the wire method in favor of a sawzall blade made just for windshield work. I think a regular blade turned backwards will work almost as well in a pinch.

Thanks for all the suggestions, and especially offers to help out by abscate! I ended up selling the car, don't really need it right now, and then I save the cash for another, older volvo with more problems (240 wagon anyone?) It was sad to see her go, but hopefully some of the parts can keep your wagons running for years to come.
