Driver's door module and bad right rear lock

Post by firstv70volvo »

The other day I wasn't able to unlock the car door locks from the driver's door module lock/unlock button. Remote key fob worked okay but I noticed the right rear passenger door lock wasn't working; if locked it wouldn't unlock and if unlocked it wouldn't lock. I could hear and feel the lock activating but no motion with the door lock knob.
Removed and broke open the door lock assembly and found a broken linkage part inside. The broken lever transfers motion from the electric motor and worm drive to mechanically lock and unlock the locking hardware. These assemblies aren't serviceable so replaced with a salvaged part. There's more parts in the door lock assembly and complexity than I expected.

Good info. It is surprising such metallic part broke like that. Perhaps a manufacturing defect

I wonder what mine looks like inside. My left rear is doing the same thing with the lock, and for some reason I can't get that window to roll up or down (a problem I'll start a new thread on, unless I forgot to plug the rear switch back in.). Kind of neat to see the interworkings of the module, and I wish they were serviceable. I've fixed modules on Toyotas before, but they have bolts to take them apart for service.

Firstv70volvo,

Your original problem(s) seemed to be two-part (DDM Lock button and LR Lock Motor). Do you still have a problem with the DDM?
Just curious...

I should clarify, there was no actual problem with the DDM (although I didn't know it at the time) just a difference in the lock/unlock function using the DDM button as compared to the key FOB remote with the bad RR lock. Using the DDM button it would lock all the locks okay but wouldn't unlock anything because of the bad RR lock. The key FOB would lock and unlock all the locks except the RR lock because of the broken internal piece. I was just trying to described the differences in operation between the two with the bad rear passenger lock. As soon as I replaced the bad rear passenger lock all was well using either the DDM button or key FOB.
With the bad RR lock and using the DDM button and after being able to lock all the locks the RR lock wasn't locking due to the broken piece inside. I suspect the CEM seeing that the one door was still unlocked when it should have been locked created a condition where the DDM wouldn't unlock all the doors because of the unexpected status of the RR lock. Using the key FOB it didn't matter, locks would all unlock even with a non-functioning RR lock.

Ah, so now I get it. That’s interesting. Thanks for clarifying.
