This is my VDO, out of my 94 T5M

Okay, as I found out after pulling the cluster, I have VDO unit. The one with just temp an clock.
My fault. Abyhow, there were no codes stored in A7 of OBD1, and the connectors seemed tight.

I then removed the Display unit by opening the 2 black torx screws and turns out that nothing inside looks corroded, dirty, no visibly burnt diodes or alike.

Now, my initial thought was that maybe the LCD display went south, but then the red/orange LED that displays temperatures below 2° Celsius should still be on (it was on yesterday before the display failed).
So, my guess right now is that the Microprocessor that feeds the display or something else is malfunctioning.
Does anyone know if I could just replace that Display unit with one out of a similar cluster (94 or 95 MY)? And could I use the unit out of a cluster with the full info function? I know I wouldn't get the MPG etc displayed, but it would make part hunting easier.

Looks like there is a lead poking through.

You have fantastic vision! This one looks shady, but there are a few more just like this, so I thought this could be they way they csme from the factory (see closeup below). But resoldering surely doesn't hurt...

Does anyone of you have a wiring diagram of a 94 Cluster and a 96 cluster? I am thinking about putting a readily available 96 display into my 94 cluster.

Okay, so I eventually fixed the problem by getting a used 9442045 display unit. Now everything works again (knock on wood).

2 things worth mentioning:

1). Until I removed my old display, the lightbulb of the display unit worked fine. After putting this bulb into the new display unit that came without a bulb, the old one burnt out immediately. I don't know why.

2). There are two 9442045 display units with different connectors. They both work. One of them has a 9 wire connector (not to be confused with the 10 wire connector of the large display with the trip computer) and one has 6 wires. They both work, because the 9 wire connector has 3 wires that are not connected insode the display on the print board.
