Fuel pump constantly priming

Post by bcbud3 »

I have a base model 95. When I turn the key to the first setting, I can hear the pump running. Unfortunately, it doesn't stop running. I noticed this, one morning after listening to the radio. When I got out of the car, I thought I smelled strong fuel odor. Where do I start troubleshooting this? Thanks

Replace fuel pump relay.
Unfortunately....it sounds like it was allready replaced with wrong one or hot wired directly.
There are 2 types....red and yellow one.
Somebody mentioned that there is also a green one.

They are not interchangeable between colors and you must know which one was fitted originally.

Fuel pump MUST prime in key position II ONLY....not pos.I.

I have seen red and green and have swapped them around without paying any attention to colors and never noticed any effect. I know for sure my 95 came with green and has red now, I bought a new red one about 4 years ago. Maybe I have seen yellow but not sure.

Little boxes, little boxes,

There’s a red one and a green one and a yellow one....there all look like boxes and they all look just the same ....

Except.....

That yellow has an extra NC triggered terminal that might be important

OK! So good news and bad news! Changed out my spark plugs to factory Volvo plugs and BOY what a difference (compared to the worn out ngk's that were in there). After putting that back together (and wrecking that accordion like aluminum pipe from air box to exhaust pipe in back of engine) I decided to check what was up with my fuel pump relay. Surprise, surprise all that's there is a jumper!

I do not have any relays across the top row. I remember when I bought the car, the po said there was a bag in the spare tire wheel well with spare parts. Lo and behold, there's the relay! Dated end of 1994. No time to put it back in the fuse panel (too dark). I'll try this weekend. Now I need to do the capacitor mod on mine if it's not working.

Ok....now....your signature says 1995 850 GLE.
GLE in EU market means that you have 10v engine.
Post a picture of engine bay and a spare relay you have.

There is a possibility that you have(need) a yellow relay since 10v cars have Siemens management.

You can get something very similar to that hose from (nearly) any auto parts store in the exhaust section. Just measure the inside diameter, I don't recall the size.

The hose just routes warmed air from above the exhaust manifold to the intake, which is a good thing in cold climates and completely unnecessary in warm ones. If you lived in coastal California and never drove the car into sub freeing conditions I'd say just forget about it.

I've never seen a part number for it.
