Groaning/Whine from front right side of engine

Post by yanga001 »

Hi Everyone,

So ive noticed that the 98 v70 has recently developed a mid tone mechanical whine that seems to be tied to rpm. At first i thought it was low power steering fluid, however i filled it and it still persists. This is not an urgent issue as i am about to go through exams, however i wanted to keep a log of this in case it escalates.

As of right now the following has been checked and tested:
Power steering fluid - filled to spec
Oil- middle of the specification on the dipstick, last oil change was 5000 km
Transmission fluid - Brownish darker, last drain and fill was 24k km ago so it is on the list to change, transmission does not jolt, jerk, or make odd sounds

Issue persists in neutral, drive, does not seem to go away with speed. I will see if i can upload a recording at some point.

things to check, alternator/bearings, serpentine belt idler/tensioner, water pump, timing belt idler/tensioner

Get a mechanics stethoscope to pinpoint. If it's the water pump or timing belt items, it becomes critical.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Forgot to mention, timing belt done 3000 km ago along with water pump by a master independent. He inspected the rest of the timing area when he did the work.

Ill check the serpentine and alternator.

That’s good news!

Start hunting down the serpentine belts and it’s associated hardware.

I had (have, I've yet to fix it) a similar issue. A mid-tone whine that was tied to revs, but mine only existed when the engine was cold. As it warmed up the noise slowly faded. In my case it was a bad serpentine idler pulley and bad tensioner pulley. Which of the two was causing the noise I can't say, though the idler pulley was more deteriorated.

Another possible source of the groaning sound can be the oil thermostat near the oil filter. It makes a strange moaning/whistling noise when the engine oil is cold and goes away when the oil is fully warmed up.

Whenever I pick up Matt in the T5 I get a whining but I’ve figured out it comes from the passenger seat

Now that is very interesting, I have not heard of this before. Are there any threads discussing it? To be honest, I didn't even know these had oil thermostats.

The OP does not, as his car is N/A. He needs to stick to the spinny parts outside the timing cover.
