Water pipe banjo bolt

Post by Mike Langlois »

Greetings All,
A quick question regarding the Banjo bolt that secures the PCV waterline to the back of the head (2002 V70 X/C). Is this a restricted flow Banjo bolt or an unrestricted full flow banjo bolt? I ended up with both and can not figure out which one is used here. Vida shows it as the same as the Banjo bolt that is located under the manifold near the thermostat (the most dreaded Banjo on the V70). It looks like the Banjo under my manifold has been updated to the check valve style and I am fairly certain that the Banjo on the back of the head does not have a check valve.
Yours,
Manic Mike

The Bolt at the rear has no check valves as it has to be a straight shot for the coolant water; and the new one for whatever reason has probably been changed to a 19mm form a 17mm. Do you really need a new bolt for that though? Beats me. You are gonna have to remove the top engine mount and the aluminum part that's blocking one of the cam shaft sensors, so that you can install the new pipe in one piece. It gives you all the working room isn't hard after that.

The bolt under the manifold is not as hard as people hype it up to be. I used a 1/4 swivel ratchet with a 3/8 adapter for the 17mm and I used a pipe in order to get it in and get all of the leverage to break it open. It can be easily removed with some maneuvering. And yes, that bolt has a check valve, and a new one is mandatory since it should be clogged with carbon.

Really, the problem is the air box trap and that stupid skinny rubber pipe that's been clogged with carbon that also clogs the banjo; you really don't need to bother replacing the whole pipe, and my mechanic told me he doesn't even bother with the whole pipe anymore. It's mostly just an extra hour if you're slow enough. Of course if it's a 15+ yr old pipe then give it a shot; you might find out that your camshaft's leaking like I did.

And if you are changing the pipe, then you'd also want a gallon of Volvo coolant and distilled water on standby. I lost a lot of liquid because the car was at the wrong angle.

You'd also want silicone lubricate to put all them rubber into their holes, else you'll be cursing for eternity.
Throttle body cleaner, and a new gasket to forget about the throttle body for years. Don't worry about cleaning any of the aluminum, it's just air gaskets.

This is the ratchet I used.

Many thanks to Chris and Abscsate. Fortunately, I have the radiator/inter cooler/condenser out for an intercooler upgrade (along with everything else) and I believe I will install the intake Manifold/banjo while I have access. I really like the ratchet, and I do not have one. Looking for 280-300 hp from the motor, once I find the auxiliary belt tensioner I seem to have misplaced....

Manic Mike
