Puddle of water on drivers side when rain, 1989 740 GL Wagon

After it rains, I find a puddle of water on the drivers side floor. I have a sunroof with shot weather stripping. I have duct taped it off. The duct tape appears to be working although after it rains I occasionally see a puddle of water. Sometimes the tape works and sometimes it doesn't. I am possibly not sealing my sunroof off properly. However, the cause of the leak may be more than just the sunroof. I can't figure it out. I also can't locate any weather stripping. My car has 188,000 miles on it.

Water ingress can be very difficult to find. If you have sealed the sunroof and it is keeping the water out most of the time I can't see why it would let it in occasionally.

I did not have this problem on my 740 but on my 240 I had occasional water in the same place as yours. A Volvo dealer told me, free of charge, that the panel just to the front of the door may have been the point of ingress. Behind the panel there is a hole allowing access to the rear of the courtesy light switch. This hole was covered by waterproof tape as the gap between the outer wing (fender?) and the inner panel was a drainage channel for rain water. The tape had been disturbed and was not doing its job. New tape - waterproof for the next 4 years when I sold the old beast.

It may pay to check behind the panel in case it is the same system on the 740.

Thanks. I'll check it out. Before I have at it I want to make sure I am thinking of the correct panel.

When I owned 740's I noticed leaks caused by the mastic or caulking cracking under the air intake grille. You have to take off the wiper arms and remove a couple of 10mm bolts, including one in the middle, if I recall correctly and take out the grille. This is a good time to clean the area and look for possible leak areas. I used a good grade of caulk after thoroughly cleaning the cracked area.

The panel to remove is inside the car just forward of the front door and going up from floor level. You will probably have to remove the sill cover panel to get it out. They all fasten with either screws or plastic turn clips.
