2000 v70 ATF choices, How to diagnose a suspicious transmission?

Post by FireFox31 »

My new-to-me 2000 V70 non-turbo automatic is acting suspiciously. How can I have a shop formally diagnose it so I know what needs fixing? Are there any telltale signs of problems which a shop can find?

Fourth gear seems to be the problem. When accelerating through the gears, it's quickly shifts out of 4th to 5th. When driving at 45 mph, it may cycle between 4th and 5th more than I'd like. Rarely, when driving at 45, I'll feel the power cut out for a second (presumable dropping to 5th and back to 4th very quickly).

Before I invest too much into this car, I need to positively identify any transmission problems and get them fixed. Thanks.

Do a complete flush. It's a cheap way to weed out fluid issues.

Not sure why Amazon is out of the Havoline but it's in 3 of my cars now. Don't buy any high mileage transmission fluids.

First video recommends Volvo Fluid Only. I've seen other videos where the hose is inserted into the radiator where they pulled out the line. I would do so just in case the fluid is reverse flow. Just insert both hose into the bottle till you figure out which way the fluid flows. Second video shows reverse flow.

Definitely do a series of drain and fills to get fresh ATF in a new to you car.

+1 on the drain and fill. This fixed weird symptoms on my 96 R (4spd, though).
It's a cheap fix if it works

Thanks. Now to get the correct fluid. The manual says that the AW55-50 LE 5-speed auto uses Volvo gearbox oil part 1161540-8. Apparently that's JWS 3309 spec fluid. Instead of paying $15 per Liter for the Volvo part, I may get the Aisin type T-IV fluid, part # ATF-0T4, for $7 per Liter. Since Aisin made the transmission, surely I can trust their fluid at half the price. What do you think?

I think jimmy57 , the guru here, has blessed Valvoline MaxLife synthetic ATF at about $5 per liter for the P80 and late P80 transmissions

Stay tuned

Hello adrian22, I couldn't find one of the many posts on this subject because I think linking to them is efficient.

We've had 5 of these (AW55-50) transmissions in the family and have had no problem using the following fluids.
Mobil 3309 -found a 12 qt. case in a Virginia auto parts store.
Wolf's Head Super Universal Synthetic Transmission Fluid -bought 3 cases of this through Amaliestore.com in Florida.
Toyota Type IV -bought 3 of these at a dealership.
Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic Dex/Merc LV gallon jugs -I've bought over 13 gallons of the stuff during sales at AutoZone.
NOTE: The "LV" is vitally important. It must be the LV.
