No Volvos in our area so have been checking out Auctions. I actually created an account with SCA yesterday but discovered you can go direct with IAA as SCA is an agent / middleman. Sold for $1,300.

It's repaired already and at a decent price. If they had fixed the dent in the door I would have gone and taken a test drive.

I think SCA has a $250 fee, or 15%. I just signed up, then stopped the process when I saw the fee and the $1,000 minimum deposit

This is good to know about but it looks like these shops are probably self-listed, which leaves you with the usual problem of sifting the grain from the chaff. For my zip code it returns six shops: the three that are known to be good in this area and three I've never heard of and wouldn't take a Volvo to without more information. I'd maybe use one of those three if there were customer reviews there too, but even online reviews you need to be careful about trusting.

You're probably best off going with personal recommendation as in your original post. Maybe this site is a good starting point for that.
