Multiple CEL Codes - No start again...

Post by MazdaDude »

Hello everyone,

I posted here earlier in 2020 about a no start issues.

We’re talking maybe 8 months ago. Replaced the starter, wires, camshaft sensors, and spark plugs. Boots are all good for the spark wires.

P0018, P0171, P0341, P0344, P0340, P0365

Total of 6 codes...

When I try to start the vehicle, all the lights come on, reading a good 12.5V, all I get is a single click that can be felt in the shifter knob. I took the cam sensors out and cleaned them, tried sticking them in the freezer and trying again, but nothing.

Please help, this is the third time this vehicle has decided to just stop working... and there’s just so many codes that I’m not 100% sure what the issue is. Last time it thee similar codes for the camshaft sensors, but it turned out to be the starter but I replaced them anyway. I just need to get it running again so we can trade it in... can’t afford the multi thousand dollar repairs multiple times a year.

These would help your posting:
1) mileage for your 2008 S80
2) lookup and post word descriptions that go with each DTC
3) search internet on each code & word description

Have you tried jump-starting from a battery cranking out 14Vdc? 12.5V under no load is a weak battery -- under what load did you sample the 12.5V?

It appears you're not getting the starter motor solenoid relay to trip.

Did you check the fuse for the starter motor relay (Fuse 34 in the main engine bank)?

A 13-year-old Volvo with ? miles -- I wouldn't expect a trade-in offer unless <120K and immaculate condition/full maintenance records.

But, don't jump to conclusions about cost to repair....focus on root cause diagnosis, then decide whether to fix or sell for salvage ($700).

@pbierre

Thank you for the reply! Sorry I have been out and just had the chance to get back at looking at this car.

So I let the car sit for a few days with no battery, I made sure the battery was charged up. It reads 12.4 under no load it’s only a 7 month old battery.

The engine codes have cleared, but the no-start persisted. After about 20-30 mins of messing with things it pops up only 2 CEL codes now. P0725 and P1719. I hear a single clicking coming from the shifter area, a click coming from the steering column (I’m assuming is the wheel lock mechanism releasing).

I’m leaning towards an issue with the transmission shifting solenoid? Which would explain the other symptoms her car was experiencing over the last year such as a hard shift from 2nd to 3rd, Automatic. And periodic lagging in transmission shifting.

I have confirmed that the Battery is good, the starter is good, the wires are good, spark plugs are good, ignition coils and boots and wires are good, cam sensors are good.

I have never done any work on a transmission, so perhaps there is a guide somewhere for this particular vehicle? As to how to access it and test/replace whatever solenoid is probably causing this no-crank no-start?

Much appreciated! I’m worried the repair costs are going to exceed the value of the car. Mileage is around 80-100k

Try the different ignition modes.

Note that you need to keep your foot off the brake for some of the ignition modes.

The picture shows what should power up in the various modes.

Confirm that everything except the starter works

Try startling in neutral instead of Park

Good luck

MAZDA_DUDE,

First you need to figure out why the starter doesn't engage.

For my S80 3.2 it won't start if the drivers door isn't closed (Volvo is concerned about my safety)

There are several thing that need to happen before the starter motor will engage, if you get to ignition mode II and move the shifter to neutral and then apply the brake and press start and you get the same result (a single click) then you will need to look at the wiring, relay and fuses for the starter.

Here is a diagram for my LR2 3.2 (same engine as the S80) The S80 has the same components.

Are you doing the work or is someone doing it for you?

Good luck
