evap purge canister

Post by gator91384 »

Can anyone tell me where the evap purge canister and valve are located on a 2008 S80 3.2, I am getting a P0442 code and already put on a new gas cap and code popped up again. I want to check the hoses and purge valve next.

There are dozens of possible leak points in the fuel / EVAP system. It's not recommended to guess your way through this maze.

The diagnostic approach to use is the pressurized smoke test. Many repair shops have the equipment. You should make clear you want to pin-point the leak making repair actionable from the test results, and obtain photographic evidence.

You didn't specify whether you have AWD -- that could spell a big headache in being able to get to and fix the leak. The FWD fuel tank is fairly easy to lower (should the leak require it), while the AWD tank is very expensive to remove trapped above the drive-train....the rear-end has to come apart.

Gator,

Assuming that you have a leak then @Pbierre is correct you will need something that can find a very small leak.

However if the system isn't working correctly then the root cause may be something else.

This thread will point you to the things that can fail and how to troubleshot the problem

Note: this is for a Land Rover with the same 3.2 as your S80 (I own one of each)

Note: when my Audi complained that the gas cap was lose I lubricated the seal with some silicone spray, I would do that first if it were me

Good luck

Gator,

This guide explains how the Evap system works

Good luck

PS I did see that Volvo sells the filter for the leak detection pump and if you read the other link that I posted above a clogged filter can cause a MIL (Note: a bad pump can cause the problem as well)

Filter part number 30750672
